Shakespeare and Cultural Appreciation at MCCC
A member of the Society of Friends, Adam Oltman Porcher resides in Lawrenceville, NJ, and has a degree in computer science. Adam Porcher enjoys acting, having previously performed in roles such as Francis Flute in A Midsummer Night's Dream at Mercer County Community College (MCCC) in New Jersey.

In 2016, MCCC presented Shakespeare's play, A Midsummer Night's Dream, with an innovative cultural amalgamation. Students spent time throughout the year learning about jazz and Indian or Hindi dance, which they then incorporated into the show, using gestures dating back more than two millennia.

Each year, MCCC's theatre/dance program focuses on a particular area of theater history, providing students and audiences alike with a rich cultural experience. In preparation for this performance of A Midsummer Night's Dream, students read about Indian dramaturgy, music, and dance, delving into classic plays from India such as Sakuntala by Kalidasa and Little Clay Cart by Sudraka.

Their work resulted in a play with inspiration from Bollywood that melded together distinct cultural elements in an appreciation of these different cultures.
